Where do I train for reflexology?

There are hundreds of venues where reflexology is taught as a subject. There are some courses with qualifications given by awarding bodies that are on the QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum Agency) framework. This is a government department that approves courses for funding. The training providers for these are usually colleges of further education, though many private schools / colleges also are approved to be training providers for these awarding bodies on the QCA framework and some universities also use these awarding bodies to provide the vocational qualification whilst the university provides the academic qualification.

Other universities provide academic qualifications in complementary therapies / medicine and / or health studies, offering full degrees and specific modules in these subjects. Some use professional membership organisations to provide the practical assessment and a certificate to practise with its ensuing opportunity for insurance cover whilst others still offer an academic qualification only. It is up to the prospective student to check whether a certificate to practise is part of the course on offer or whether additional training and assessment is required before the graduate can belong to a professional body and obtain insurance.

Some private schools provide training which is not on the QCA framework. This does not mean the course is inferior. Sometimes the hours and course content on offer is a lot more than a FE College course and with the tutor student ratio often less the training is much more in-depth. Usually, of course, due to lack of government funding, the cost of the course is a lot more and this does not guarantee quality. Some will say smaller private schools are more committed to protecting their reputation by providing quality but the prospective student needs to check that the school is accredited by a reputable professional body. A professional membership organisation that is a current member of the Reflexology Forum, the emerging regulatory body for reflexology in the UK, is the closest there is to a guarantee of quality. All the above advice is given in good faith but will also highlight the urgent need for regulation of the profession. The public can be assured that this is well underway, the regulatory process is in ‘full swing’ with the task of establishing a core curriculum to standardise the training and reduce the inconstancies listed above virtually complete.
